Shenzhen, China

Karl took the fastest train he could from Guangzhou to Shenzhen. Traveling along that corridor, he couldn’t help thinking about the last time he was in the region. At that time, the Chinese had converted swampland to make Shenzhen into a manufacturing hub of China, based on its proximity to Hong Kong. Now, the sheer mass of new development was startling. Nearly every new-tech in China had its headquarters here, and most major companies from around the globe had a presence here. Which is why there were so many ex-pats around every corner. When he reported back to Moscow and Washington, he would be sure to mention that each of them needed a much larger presence in Shenzhen.

He got to his new apartment and immediately changed his clothes and brushed his teeth. Then he packed a small bag of essentials before picking up his phone and checking for messages. Although he knew that there had been a number of messages that came through, he could not read them, since the phone almost immediately deleted them within a minute. His phone wasn’t only special in that way, it was not dependent on the local cell tower infrastructure. Which was actually too bad, since Shenzhen was the first city worldwide to be fully integrated with 5G technology. Folks in this city could download a full movie within seconds. But his phone linked directly to the Russian satellite system in geostationary orbit above the equator. This was a good thing, considering his current proximity to that belt of satellites, but the technology wasn’t always perfect. It was smattered with glitches.

He didn’t wait for Goran to call again. Karl typed in the man’s number from memory and waited. While he did so, his eyes wandered around the room trying to figure out where the SVR had placed additional video cameras or audio mics.

“Wow,” Goran said, using his English. “You finally get back to me.”

“Sorry about that,” Karl said. He knew it was useless to ask for forgiveness with Goran, so he wouldn’t even try. “I forgot to take my phone with me.”

“You’ve been offline for more than a day.”

“You know where I went,” Karl reminded his handler.

“I had to track your Visa and send a man for you.”

“About that,” Karl said. “I had to tell that man to fuck off. He asked too many questions.”

“Good. He’s not authorized to know what you know. But, as I’m sure you know, sometimes certain officers are like little school girls. They think they have to know everything. Did you hurt him?”

“No. I didn’t go that far.” Karl couldn’t help but tell Goran about the Aussie woman. If he didn’t, the rumor would spread from the Guangzhou consulate man back to Olga eventually. So, he explained to Goran about the Aussie woman, Stella, and how he was using this woman to get to the missing Aussie woman. Once he found her, he could find the bastards who had killed their men.

“How close are you to finding her?” Goran asked.
